ABOUT CHARACTER COMMUNITY YORK REGION
We build inclusive and connected communities though programs and initiatives that instill character and have a lasting impact in the lives of children and youth.
Character Community York Region is a registered charitable organization that supports York Region’s vision of welcoming and inclusive character community. We provide children and youth character development programs and initiatives that focus on positive character attributes and behaviours that lead to personal achievement and success and build caring and inclusive communities.

OUR STRATEGIES
To provide children and youth with the tools to make positive life decisions and live to their full potential, we utilize the following character attributes in all our programs and initiatives: Compassion, Courage, Fairness, Honesty, Humility, Inclusiveness, Initiative, Integrity, Optimism, Perseverance, Respect and Responsibility. Our programs and initiatives use the character attributes to develop a framework of positive behaviour that will lead to a more inclusive, supportive and collaborative community.
OUR PROGRAMS
SLAP SHOT HOCKEY PROGRAM
Slap Shot is a free seven-week hockey/character development program for underprivileged boys and girls ages 8-12 that provides a fun and inclusive introduction to the game of hockey and Canadian culture to children whose ability to participate in recreational sport is limited due to financial and cultural barriers.
MUSIC ALIVE PROGRAM
A Region wide music festival for youth that is open to all types of musical ensembles, soloists, choirs, bands, orchestras and classroom groups. Music Alive provides an opportunity for young people to collaborate and work as a team to showcase their musical talent and celebrate character in the arts.
YOUTH SOCIAL JUSTICE DAYS PROGRAM
A series of student led half day events for 800 students in grades 6-8 that focuses on recognizing the need to promote efforts to tackle issues such as guns and gangs, racism, sexism, online safety and oppression through guest speakers and workshops. This program engages youth in the issues of social justice and how they can make a difference in their community.
EAST GWILLIMBURY SENIORS TASK FORCE PROGRAM
A senior led community based social inclusion program that provides access to a variety of social and physical activity classes, bus trips and educational workshops that are designed to meet the needs and interests of seniors in East Gwillimbury.
OUR ORGANIZATION
Character Community York Region is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors, a full time Executive Director, a part-time Administrative Assistant and three Program Managers. We are a registered charitable organization.
